Trans Pacific Partnership Council

History

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) was a trade agreement initially negotiated among 12 Pacific rim countries to establish comprehensive economic integration and cooperation. It was signed in 2016 but faced various challenges. This endeavour has been one of the largest trade and collaborative arrangements ever, compromising the most advanced economy with 40% world GDP. However, it faces challenges on various grounds, including disarray in economic structural regulatory frameworks and cultural contexts. The fundamental lesson from TPP hardship has been pursuing the collaborative endeavour from a civic society standpoint rather than the administration level. This historical context gives rise to the Transpacific Partnership Council, a network of aligned societies that orchestrates the civic society to face current challenges of the times, including mitigating the risk of emerging technologies and achieving sustainable development goals.
